About the Role
We are seeking a Head of Software to lead ANGOKA's embedded software and HMI applications team - a practical, experienced, hands-on and fair engineering leader who can design, architect, develop, and manage a team delivering high-quality, secure, and industry-compliant embedded software and HMI applications. This software enables effective communication and data sharing between industrial (cyber-physical) systems and physical AI.
You will own the embedded software architecture and act as design authority for ANGOKA's software stack (the ACS) and its associated HMI applications, with particular focus on embedded software - libraries, drivers, and applications - for low SWAP (Size, Weight and Power) Layer 2 and Layer 3 secure communication networking, including network orchestration and communication routing.
You will report to the Engineering Director, with a dotted line to the CTO, and work alongside the Head of Hardware and other Technical Leads. This is a hands-on technical leadership role, combining deep embedded engineering credibility with people leadership, project ownership, and the ability to take concepts rapidly from prototype toward market.
Key Responsibilities:
Embedded Architecture & Technical Authority
Design Authority: Own the embedded software architecture and act as design authority for ANGOKA's software stack (ACS) and associated HMI applications
Secure Comms Networking: Architect, develop, and deliver embedded software (libraries, drivers, and applications) for low SWAP Layer 2 and Layer 3 secure communication networking, including network orchestration and communication routing
Compliance by Design: Ensure embedded and HMI software designs meet stringent security, safety, and regulatory requirements, working toward compliance with standards such as MISRA, ISO/IEC 62443, DO-326A, UL2900-2-2, DO-178C, NIST SSDF, NIST Zero Trust Architecture, and NCSC Secure by Design
Technical Governance: Set and enforce rigorous embedded software design standards, code reviews, quality gates, and release management across the embedded and HMI codebase.
Rapid Prototyping & Delivery
Prototype to Product: Lead rapid prototyping and delivery of minimal marketable products, taking concepts from TRL3 to TRL8 within 8-12 week cycles wherever feasible
Resource & Schedule Ownership: Plan, estimate, and deliver embedded software work packages across multiple concurrent projects, owning schedules, dependencies, and delivery risks
Team Leadership
People & Capacity Management: Line-manage, mentor, and grow a high-performing embedded software and HMI applications team, allocating work and balancing team capacity across concurrent projects
Commercial & External Engagement
Bids & Technical Proposals: Provide technical input to project bids, proposals, and Statements of Work, translating customer requirements into deliverable, costed embedded software plans
Stakeholder Representation: Represent ANGOKA as the embedded software technical lead in customer and partner discussions, working closely with hardware, product, systems, and commercial teams
Person Specifications
What we are looking for:
8+ years' hands-on embedded software development experience (C/C++), including designing, architecting, and delivering production-grade embedded systems
Demonstrated experience in a technical leadership or team lead role, mentoring and managing embedded software engineers
Proven experience architecting, developing, and delivering embedded software (libraries, drivers, applications) for secure communication networking at Layer 2/Layer 3, including network orchestration and routing
Experience designing and delivering HMI applications for industrial or cyber-physical systems
Proven track record of managing and mentoring embedded teams to deliver high-quality, secure, industry-compliant software in a fast-moving scale-up environment
Desirable Experience:
Comfortable working to the kind of compressed, rapid-prototyping timelines referenced above
Good knowledge of secure communications and applied cryptography - a significant advantage
Familiarity with one or more of the security/safety compliance frameworks referenced above
Cloud/backend development experience (e.g. Python, Go, Java) - desirable but not essential
Experience with AI-assisted development tools or on-premise LLM deployment - desirable but not mandatory
Familiarity with hardware-software co-design and embedded security techniques
Experience with wireless, cellular, satellite, or industrial communication systems
Knowledge and technical understanding of tools such as the Atlassian Suite, GitHub, Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, and GitLab CI
The Company
At ANGOKA, our mission is to secure the digital foundations of the modern world - embedding trust, resilience, and safety into the communication and data networks that underpin smart cities, autonomous systems, and future aviation. Airports and airspace are increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, as highlighted by recent events in Europe.
ANGOKA is building the technology platform for a safer, more connected future aviation system. Our aim is to focus and operate first in air, and the resultant product and systems would map rapidly across to other sectors, including directly to land and marine transportation.
ANGOKA is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We welcome and encourage applicants from all backgrounds and experiences. We do not tolerate discrimination or harassment.
At ANGOKA, all our hiring decisions are based on business needs, job requirements and individual qualifications, and we are committed to creating an inclusive culture that supports and represents our diverse society.
